Emotional Triggers

Have your experienced something like you are just chilling out in the sofa, then she suddenly bursts into you with lines:

“Notice anything different?” or “I can’t believe you’re so oblivious!”

Causes

An emotional trigger is anything — including memories, experiences, or events — that sparks an intense emotional reaction, regardless of your current mood.

Emotional triggers are associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Remedies

When these strong emotions come up, don’t ask them to try to ignore them or fight them back. Instead, approach them with curiosity to get more insight on what may have triggered them. This gives both of you better understanding how to handle the situation better.

  • For her - she could improve her anger management skills, so could step back a bit, before lashing out.
  • For you - try not to "retaliate" and understand what is really happening.
